Let's face it, we've all known someone who had
naturally huge breasts. Many women not only feel
self-conscious, but large breasts are both
physically and maybe psychologically disabling.

The physical burden of big breasts such as back
ache, and poor posture make exercising
impossible.

As well, women complain to me that no matter how slim they may be they feel
matronly, and they are tired of the unwanted attention, never mind the hassle of
fitting clothes.

Breast reduction not only eliminates those medical problems but firms up and
reshapes the breast. There are two surgical approaches.

1. STANDARD BREAST REDUCTION is done with incisions made around the
nipple, along the lower crease of the breast with an incision that connects the
two. So what happens is that the nipple area is moved up and sometimes made
smaller, and the area between the nipple and the lower crease is shortened.

2. VERTICAL BREAST REDUCTION is similar to the standard, except there is no
incision in the lower crease and it is combined with liposuction. This method,
when possible, is becoming increasingly popular because there is less scarring
involved.

The big unavoidable drawback with breast reduction surgery is that there are
scars that will be visible, and may take up to a year to fade. However most
women who have had it say it's the best thing they have ever done, because the
posture and back benefits last a lifetime, not to mention that for many it's the first
time they can buy clothes off the rack without having to have them adjusted.

Breast reduction surgery takes around two hours and is done under a general
anaesthetic. With a little pain medication you will be up and about the next day.
You will be sore but should be able to go back to work in two to three weeks.

As with any operation there are risks such as reduced nipple sensation, wound
healing problems, asymmetry, infection, and reduced blood supply to the nipple.
Some women have breast fed following a breast reduction, however this does not
eliminate the fact that you may not be able to breast feed and this must be
discussed with your surgeon.
