Liposuction is one term you are familiar with. You
probably know someone who has had it or read
one of dozens of articles about it. Why? Because
it is undeniably one of the most popular procedures
of our time. We talked earlier about areas that
neither diet nor exercise can improve, but
liposuction can solve those hard to reach problem
areas on the thighs, hips, buttocks, love handles
,arms, breasts and chin.

The better your skin tone and elasticity, the better the result. Depending on how
much you want removed and from how many places, liposuction can be done on
a number of different areas at one time.

The most common technique is called tumescent. But all methods of liposuction
involve removing fat through small incisions with a cannula (a thin tube) attached
to a high pressure suction machine. The type of anesthetic depends on where
and how much fat is being removed, as does the length of surgery. When the
surgery is over you should wear a compression garment for about six weeks
which will control the swelling and help your skin mold to your new shape. Make
no mistake liposuction is not a cure for cellulite, if you had it before you will have
it after.

There will be some swelling and bruising which will subside within a month or
two. Some patients experience numbness or discomfort for varying periods of
time. Occasionally the skin may have a slightly uneven or rippled effect, but this
can be corrected.

While you will be out of bed the next day, forget about the gym for a couple of
weeks. Pain is easily controlled and scarring is hardly an issue since the
incisions are very small. Recovery is surprisingly quick but will depend on the
number and location of the areas being treated.
