Everywhere you look you see them, those young
women wearing low rise jeans and fun crop tops
with tummies as flat and firm as a board. No it's
not fair. What makes it worse is those abdominal
crunches at the gym aren't going to make the
difference. Sometimes the only answer is a tummy
tuck or what we surgeons call an abdominoplasty.
What the tuck does is remove the excess skin and
folds of fat, tighten the muscles to give you a
smaller waist and a firmer tummy.

The tummy tuck involves an incision along your lower abdomen just above your
pubic area and another one around your belly button. We then pull the skin and
fat away from the tummy, tighten the muscles and then pull the skin and fat back
down, removing the excess tissue. I know it doesn't sound enticing, but believe
me the end result can be dramatic.

This surgery takes a couple of hours under a general anesthetic and it usually
requires that you spend one night in hospital or in a private clinic. You will have to
wear a spandex surgical girdle for up to six weeks to give the muscles support
and control the swelling. The soreness can be taken care of with some pain
medication, and you will likely be up and about in a few days. Many people find
they are ready to go back to work within two weeks.

As with any major surgery there will be scarring. However, the scars fade and
become flatter and lighter with time. There is also the risk of tissue loss and fluid
build-up. These things will be discussed during your consultation with your
surgeon.
